Stakeholders seek cure for diabetes

A professor of Medicine and consultant endocrinologist at Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile Ife, Prof. Babatope Kolawole, has called for strong effective intervention strategies and policies to stall the increase in the number of people developing diabetes, especially in Africa.

Kolawole, who said diabetes had continued to be on the increase because preventive strategies to stem the tide were not being adopted, called for the deployment of resources for screening and detecting cases of the chronic disease.

The don, who spoke in a lecture, titled, ‘Achieving diabetes prevention through education that he delivered at Afe Babalola University, Ado Ekiti in commemoration of the 2022 World Diabetes Day, said increased awareness would largely contribute to the prevention of Diabetes.

Kolawole hinted that by 2045, the number of people with diabetes would increase to 784 million people.

ABUAD Chancellor, Aare Afe Babalola SAN, urged researchers including those in the university to expedite action and find a cure for diabetes, which he said was being described as a silent killer.
