A tsunami warning has been issued after a 7.0 magnitude earthquake hit the Solomon Islands midday on Monday.

A second earthquake measuring 6.0 struck nearby 30 minutes later, according to Daily Mail UK with five earthquakes recorded within a 90-minute period in the region.

Consequently US Tsunami Warning System issued a tsunami warning following an earthquake at Malango in the Solomon Islands on Tuesday.

This come hours after a 5.6 magnitude earthquake hit Indonesia’s West Java province earlier killing at least 162 people and leaving 700 hurt, mostly in the town of Cianjur.

The prime minister of Solomon Islands, Manasseh Sogavare,  further urged residents to move to higher ground.

However, the Solomon Islands Meteorological Service has said there was no immediate tsunami threat to the region, but warned about unusual sea currents on the coast.

The US Tsunami Warning System predicts waves to reach between 0.3 metres and one metre above the tide level for some of the Solomon Islands’ coastline.
